Toyota Camry: MIL On Due to Clogged Engine Oil Galleries – Fault Diagnosis & Repair

The check engine light turns on while the vehicle is driving normally.
Fault Confirmation
Technicians inspected the vehicle and confirmed the malfunction indicator lamp was illuminated. Using the Launch X431 diagnostic scanner, DTC P0012 was retrieved:
Camshaft Position "A" — Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
After clearing the fault code and conducting a road test, the warning light reactivated immediately, with the same DTC P0012 reappearing.

Fault Analysis
Technicians saved and analyzed the fault code, referencing the official repair manual to list potential faulty components:
- Valve timing system
- Oil Control Valve (OCV)
- OCV filter screen
- Camshaft timing gear assembly
- Engine ECM (Engine Control Module)

Troubleshooting Steps
- First inspect the engine valve timing system: No abnormalities detected.
- Use the bi-directional test function of the diagnostic scanner to activate the VVT-i Oil Control Valve (OCV).
When triggering the OCV via the scanner, the engine speed showed zero fluctuation. (On fault-free vehicles, activating the OCV via Launch X431 will cause rough idle or stall.)This identified a key suspect; further inspection focused on two possibilities:① Malfunctioning camshaft timing OCV or damaged OCV wiring harness② Clogged OCV filter screen / blocked engine oil galleries leading to insufficient oil pressure
3.Remove the OCV and measure its resistance: 7.1Ω, within the standard range of 6.9–7.9Ω.
Technicians then connected the vehicle battery positive terminal to pin 1 and negative to pin 2. The valve spool actuated rapidly, confirming proper OCV operation.
5 Inspect Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly (OCV)
Step (a)
Disconnect the C32 OCV connector.
Step (b)
Measure the resistance between the OCV terminals.
Standard resistance:
6.9 Ω to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F)
Step (c)
Connect the positive terminal of the battery to terminal No.1,
and the negative terminal to terminal No.2.
Check the valve spool operation.
OK condition:
The valve spool moves rapidly back and forth.
Step (d)
Reconnect the OCV connector.
Judgment Flow
- OK: Pass inspection
- NG (Not Good): Replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly
4.Inspect engine oil condition. Pull out the oil dipstick and find the engine oil is heavily contaminated. After removing the oil filler cap, a large amount of oil sludge is adhered to the valve cover. We initially suspect insufficient engine oil pressure or clogged oil galleries.
Measure engine oil pressure with an oil pressure gauge, and the reading falls within the normal specification range.

If the engine oil pressure fails to meet specifications, inspect the oil pump.
Since the OCV, wiring harness and oil pressure all test normal, only one remaining cause is possible: the filter screen of the OCV is clogged.
