Analysis of Volkswagen EA211 Report P0016 Fault

Fault Summary
Fault Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta
Engine Model: EA211 series engine with code CSR
Fault Description: Lack of power during acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, and illuminated malfunction indicator lamp on the instrument cluster
Fault Diagnosis Procedure
1 Connect the diagnostic scanner, access the gateway list, and query the DTC memory of all systems; fault codes are detected.

2 Clear the diagnostic trouble codes. The engine runs smoothly at idle, yet the fault code reappears immediately upon acceleration. This indicates the fault is not intermittent but a persistent existing malfunction.
Possible Causes of This DTC:
- Circuit malfunction of Camshaft Position Sensor G40
- Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor G40
- Abnormal operation of variable camshaft timing adjustment system
- Malfunction in valve timing system
- Damaged signal wheel for Camshaft Position Sensor G40
- Faulty Engine Speed Sensor G28
- Defective Engine Control Unit (ECU)
3 Fault Diagnosis and Troubleshooting Based on the Above Analysis
The persistent DTC stored in the vehicle confirms that there is an actual fault within the engine valve timing adjustment system.
Following the troubleshooting principle of checking simple components first before complex ones, a direct power supply test was performed on the camshaft adjustment solenoid valve. The valve spool actuated normally. The resistance of solenoid valve N205 measured 14 Ω, which meets the specification standard.
At this stage, considering that engine oil pressure affects the actuation performance of the valve timing mechanical actuator, the engine oil pressure was measured as shown in the figure below:

Idle oil pressure is approximately 1.3 bar.

At 2000 r/min, the oil pressure is around 3.5 bar.
The measured values comply with the standard specifications stated in the repair manual. The above test results confirm that the variable camshaft timing adjustment mechanism meets normal operating requirements.
Finally, the engine valve timing was inspected. After disassembling the camshaft and crankshaft pulley, misaligned spline grooves on the crankshaft pulley were found. This misalignment created a phase offset between the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft, which triggered the fault.

Fault Cause Analysis
Misaligned spline grooves on the crankshaft pulley create a phase deviation between the pulley and crankshaft. This disrupts the phase relationship between sensor G28 and G40. After the engine control unit receives incorrect signals, it stores a diagnostic trouble code.
Fault Solution
Replace the engine timing pulley and crankshaft pulley.

The damage to the spline grooves of the crankshaft pulley is a concealed fault point, which can only be inspected after removing the crankshaft pulley. This reminds technicians that all potential fault points may lead to malfunctions before the root cause is confirmed. Therefore, comprehensive consideration must be taken throughout the troubleshooting process.
