Fault Phenomenon

A 2012 Audi A4L with a mileage of over 70,000 km triggers an oil level warning on the instrument cluster, prompting "Please add 1L of engine oil". However, the actual oil level inside the engine is normal, and no engine oil top-up is required.

Fault Diagnosis

First, we use a diagnostic scanner to read the fault codes stored in the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The retrieved fault code indicates that the engine oil level sensor G266 is short-circuited to ground.
Based on the fault code description, two possible root causes are identified:
1.Internal failure of the oil level sensor itself;
2.Short circuit to ground in the external wiring harness.
Following the troubleshooting principle of "simple checks first, complex checks later", we perform the inspection step by step:
1.Visually inspect the external wiring for obvious abrasion damage.
2. Measure the sensor circuit with a multimeter:
- Terminal 1 power supply voltage: 12.6V (normal);
- Disconnect the oil level sensor plug, measure resistance between Terminal 2 and vehicle body ground: less than 2Ω (normal);
- Check the wire between Terminal 3 of the sensor connector and the corresponding ECU terminal: no short circuit or open circuit detected (normal).
All measured circuit parameters are within the standard range.

After completing the above inspections, we decided to replace the engine oil level sensor G266.

However, the fault still recurred after multiple road tests with the new sensor installed, which meant the root cause had not been located.
Our maintenance technician then checked the relevant circuit diagrams and found that this vehicle adopts two calculation modes for engine oil level measurement: static measurement and dynamic measurement.

A faulty engine hood lock will also trigger the engine oil level warning.
We short-circuited the hood lock switch; the instrument then displayed a normal oil level reading. After repeated road tests, the fault never reappeared.

Fault Elimination

Fault Elimination by Replacing Engine Hood Lock

Case Summary

When repairing luxury vehicles, technicians need to comprehensively utilize diagnostic scanners, official repair manuals and circuit diagrams for multi-angle troubleshooting. Relying solely on personal experience will fail to improve repair accuracy and hinder efficient fault elimination.
